The Tower, Greenwood, Acharacle

Ardslignish, Argyll, Scotland

You may even see an otter in the loch; certainly seals and all manner of birds. It is a vast expanse of great beauty and long views to woodland and distant hills, rugged and unspoiled. The tower is unusual, built by Richard himself on the corner of their own house, especially for self-catering. So you will not be surprised to find that it is modern and beautifully equipped, with everything Tourist Board approved. From their own woods have come the ash for the little dining table, the Scots pine for the winding stair, the oak for the beams, and the logs - amply supplied - for the wood-burner. There’s a CD player, TV, DVD, books and a superbly equipped, tiny kitchen; underfloor heating ensures warm toes. There’s a deep tub in the bathroom, flowers and fluffy towels, and a very fine circular double bedroom with simple chintz curtains. A curved glass door opens to a small terrace with table and chairs for two and glorious views of Loch Sunart. From this remarkable place you can walk straight into the woods, onto the hillsides, into the waters of the loch. Borrow bikes for a day, pay for rucksack lunches, have the edges taken off the ruggedness. Superb in any season; dreamy and remote.
