Cyfie Farm, Shepherd’s Watch & Sheepdip Cottage, Llanfyllin
Powys, Wales
High above the beautiful Vyrnwy valley is Cyfie Farm - a 17th-century longhouse with converted farm buildings. Come to be soothed by views of gentle hills. Claire and Neil live in the longhouse and have converted the old cow crush and the granary into two smart cottages, which they manage along with a guest house on the farm. Inside, local craftsmen have achieved wonderful things: crook-shaped curtain rails, hand-made oak doors, the odd shepherd’s lantern; the attention to detail is impressive. In Shepherd’s Watch, the living areas are upstairs, where stable doors open out to views; in Sheep Dip, there’s a double height sitting room, cosy with a log fire. In both, old oak beams, heritage colours, local art, comfy sofas and heated flagged floors draw you back home at the end of the day, while smart bathrooms (one with a steam shower) and bedrooms with antique king-size beds and hand-made mattresses guarantee deep sleep. Everywhere is immaculate. Summerhouses and secluded seating areas dot the National Garden Scheme gardens, and there’s another treat in the converted pigsty: a sauna and hot-tub on decking with lights, with fabulous views over the valley. Watch the sunset as you soak... see the snow fall at dusk. Storage for bicycles and stabling for horses available.
