Cawdor Cottages, Cawdor Estate, Inverness
Cawdor, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Limpid salmon pools, ragged moorland, sweet heather - this is the Scotland of one’s most vivid imagination. The ancient castle is out of a fairytale, the vast estate is steeped in history, and the family have been here for 700 years, the first Thane appearing in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Owner Lady Isabella Cawdor mixes high-powered London fashion with acres of poetic scenery - and family life with her husband, the present Thane. With irrepressible creative flair she has turned the traditional estate cottages (scattered around the edge of pebble-banked rivers and in plunging glens) into havens of restrained luxury and sophisticated elegance. The vivid blue of Lochanshelloch makes it easy to spot: open, light and with a sparing touch of Highland chic, each cottage has log fires, deep freestanding baths, superbly comfortable sofas and antique brass beds from which you may never emerge. A bottle of wine and welcome hamper of essential groceries greet every guest. There’s fishing on the local loch, and each cottage has descriptions of beautiful local walks that you can enjoy and contact details for local alternative therapist if the unimagineable happens - you can’t unwind! From each cottage stretch miles of Highland countryside - there can be nowhere more secluded.
