Chapel Knap, Minehead
Somerset, England
Wind along the twisting lanes through the town and down to the lovely weir. The sea shimmers all the way to long views of distant Wales. There are miles of glorious coastal paths for walkers, gentle strolls straight from the door, or a just a short amble to the sloped pebble beach. A little café offers tea and cakes, a restaurant serves posher fare and, in summer, there’s a 50s seaside feel with ice creams and happy crowds. Inside is cool and contemporary with all mod cons; underfloor heating, floors of Israeli limestone, plain cream walls, a smooth leather sofa, a wide-screen TV and a gadget-laden kitchen. Upstairs: a light, beamed bedroom with a leather bed - smartly dressed in chocolate-coloured linen - plump pillows, good lighting and a sparkling bathroom. There are stunning views of the beautiful briney through every window and your own pretty garden is sheltered and well-planted, the perfect spot to sip something cool on warmer evenings. Exmoor awaits heartier souls with miles of remote walking and riding (a nearby school will supply the steed). Birdwatchers will be in heaven: the cry of the curlew, the song of the skylark in the National Park, the marshes behind the beach to spot waders. A blissful retreat.
