The Peren, Hereford
Clifford (near Hay on Wye), Herefordshire, England
Herons, kingfishers, badgers… they’ll all find their way to your private wildflower meadow. In front is the Peren, reached through herb beds, past a part canopied terrace with table, chairs and a barbecue. You enter this superb mid-Victorian barn conversion through a two-storey window - once the old threshing door. It’s the peace that hits you, then the sense of space – the open-plan living area is stylish and contemporary and has a country palette. The big sofa begs you to curl up in front of the wood-burner, good books and games are tucked under the stairs and a welcome hamper of local produce sits temptingly on the little antique kitchen table. And so to bed, up an open-plan staircase to oak floors, to a bed which peers out through that huge window. There’s an exciting glass walkway to the spotless family bathroom with beautiful stone floors and a double-ended bath. For the children there’s rabbit-spotting in the meadow, an outside play area and a toy box to explore. Owners Simon and Andrew did their stint in London and moved here for the green life: geo-thermal underfloor heating, low-energy lighting. They have an organic smallholding nearby (collect your breakfast eggs!) and will give you a tour of the barn when you arrive. You can stroll a mile and a half to the quirky book mecca of Hay on Wye - or borrow a bike for a lovely, flat, ten-minute ride.
