Barritshayes Farm Cottages, Colyton
Devon, England
Here are two adjoining barn cottages, thoughtfully kitted-out and immaculately kept by Liz. She leaves you welcome eggs from her neighbours’ chickens and couldn't be more helpful. Families will relax: Liz has chosen fuss-free fittings and functional furniture. So there’s a bunk-bedded room in The Dairy, and a privacy curtain in The Granary separating the galleried twin from the double below - nice and cosy with a sharply pitched and beamed ceiling and a skylight. The cottages’ bathrooms are small and to the point. From the entrance sitting room in The Granary you go up a few steps to a cosy kitchen area with bench seating at a pine table. Each cottage has its own little fenced garden with broad Coly Valley views; get out the barbie and stay till the sun goes down - a spectacular sight. Barritshayes is perfect for families, with a big knockabout games room (table tennis, pool, board and racket games), a large mown area, a walled, heated and gated sunny pool by Liz’s house (where she also does B&B), and a tennis court beyond. Wander at will, there’s much to admire: the Lindsays' sheep and horses, the traditional orchard, the young vineyard. At quieter times of year, couples and hikers can test the East Devon Way that passes close by, so the drying room (that doubles up as the household's recycling hub) is another plus. The pretty coast, Beer, Branscombe and Lyme Regis are further seductions.
