Cider Room Cottage, Hasland Farm, Axminster
Membury, Devon, England
This little gem is hidden at the far end of Hasland Farm, a cottage built to store the cider apples from the orchard which still stands below. Pat is a self-catering pro, she has been doing it for 30 years and people return again and again. She has made the cottage feel like a home: the crockery is decent, with no mismatches; the shelves are full of light reading and board games; the kitchen is well-equipped. It is comfortable yet modest - and there’s something extremely snug about sleeping beneath a thatched roof. The deep windows in the bedrooms look across the pond (to Pat’s Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, Mabel) and down the valley, the curtains and blinds are Laura Ashley floral and the bedside lamps a slightly incongruous art deco. The downstairs living area has exposed stone walls, low ceilings, Parker-Knoll armchairs and tassled lampshades - a traditional cottagey feel. Pat looks after guests beautifully and is as warm and generous as you could wish for. Typically, a cream tea awaits new arrivals. She also welcomes you into her own garden - the cuttings garden is worth a visit - but will happily leave you to your own devices. Fantastic value.
