Next to Lanyon, this grand old stone barn: another exemplary restoration. The granite arch above the door has a face carved in the middle that is believed to be circa 1250 - there’s history here in spades. Inside is a charming modernity: beamed ceilings and exposed rafters, solid oak and slate floors, an oak panelled wall, a granite fireplace, a limestone basin, sturdy handmade beds, appealing auction finds and ceramics from Morocco. The colours are harmonious, the comfort is superb and the whole place sparkles. You have underfloor heating, your own water supply – it’s deeply rural - and friendly but discreet owners who live onsite and for whom nothing is too much trouble. As for the bathrooms, Coswyn’s are as good as they get, from the en suite with its own fireplace and slipper bath to the stunning limestone-tiled wet room downstairs. Bedrooms are upstairs and down; from one, a door leads down granite steps to the large private garden (you have use of an outdoor swimming pool as well). Beyond is the best of Cornwall: surfing, kite-surfing and clifftop walks, Padstow, St Ives, the Lizard and Lands End.
