Stable Cottage, Wickham Lodge, Aylesford
Kent, England
There is something dreamy about gazing out on a wide stretch of river - especially when the gentle arch of Aylesford’s 13th-century bridge forms part of the view. The river, which is tidal (bobbing boats at high tide, birds at low) runs past on one side and an abundant walled garden lies behind, yours to share - pick herbs for your supper if you’re cooking in. You have your own vine-draped pergola in a lovely sheltered spot - even the car-parking area is adorned with grape vines - and there are seating spots a-plenty from which to soak up the river views. Inside, original beams span the upstairs living room; polished wooden floorboards add a classy touch. It is light, bright, rustic yet contemporary. The bedroom, downstairs, has a handsome bed, crisp linen and the best of modern furniture, beautifully set against exposed stone walls. The bathroom dazzles and is impeccably clean; there is also a separate shower room. The Bournes have taken huge care to turn this dinky space into a stylish retreat; they live next door in the Lodge and are there if you need them. You could lunch in Canterbury (a 40-minute drive) and dine in the village; with two old pubs and a 14th-century bridge, it oozes history and charm. This is a delicious riverbank nest. Walkers and cyclists particularly welcome.
