The Old Watch House, Lyme Regis
Dorset, England
Coastguards once kept watch here. Now you can sit at the big sash window and gaze on the enchanting, bustling little harbour - never-ending scene of activity. Keep vigil for long enough and you might almost imagine Louisa Musgrove jumping down the steps of the Cobb, or the French Lieutenant’s Woman staring forever seawards. This sturdy, whitewashed building with its thick cob walls has been part of Lyme’s harbourfront for 300 years and has been in the Homyer family for generations. From the welcoming little hall, where shrimp nets and deckchairs await the next visit to the beach, a panelled stairway leads up to your apartment on the first floor. In the delightful, double-aspect sitting room are two inviting sofas, a pretty round elm table, a cushioned chest (acting as a window-seat), rich rugs and fresh flowers; you’ll quickly feel at home. Bathroom and kitchen are fresh, spotless and well-equipped and the bedroom, with its pretty, white-painted furniture and restful white, oatmeal and warm cream hues, is a delicious place to snatch a quiet read in the late afternoon sun.
