Beachmodern No. 28, Bude
Cornwall, England
Open the window and you’ll hear the waves breaking at high tide; take a five minute stroll and you’re on the beach. Inside the huge, light, Victorian villa, white walls and sanded boards make the perfect backdrop for modern art and clean lines. In a gizmo-packed living room (broadband, Sky, DVD player) are roomy leather sofas - and a log fire for the traditionalists. A funky room next door makes a great overflow space for children. The huge kitchen-dining room is furnished in modern oak and gleaming stainless steel and is brilliant for large parties (you can hire a chef if you want): there’s a fabulous table, a six-burner Rangemaster hob, and numerous stainless steel utensils and pans. In good-sized bedrooms are comfy beds scattered with cushions and throws; paintings and furniture add splashes of colour, and there are views over the golf course and glimpses of the sea from most. The three bathrooms are – like everything else – stylish and spotlessly clean; the back garden has a barbecue for summer, and a beach shed (store those buckets and boards). The beach, which stretches for three miles at low tide, is super close, and Bude’s restaurants and bars, its surfing beaches and golf courses, Northcott Mouth and the North Cornwall coastal path are two minutes away.
