The Garden Room, Byfield House, Painswick
Gloucestershire, England
This is a bijou, be-flowered hideaway, tucked down a passage behind a medieval oak door in a charming Cotswold village. The sumptuous chintz bedspread on the vastly comfortable, multi-pillowed bed is reflected in the gilt mirror opposite. French windows open from the bed/sitting-room to a sitting-out area under the eaves that blends into the owners’ resplendent garden (privacy from neighbours ensured by a 20ft-high Georgian “spite wall”). Blowsy oils and watercolours in ornate frames (more flowers) hang on every wall. In the spotless white bathroom, even the waffle-cotton robe is floral. Antiques-dealer Jill gaily confesses to having got carried-away with the garden theme. Instead of a ‘welcome basket’, there’s a welcome kitchen: packed to the architraves with wine, juice, beer, fresh bread, butter, crumpets, luxury biscuits and jams. The compact space manages to fit in a washing machine as well as a pretty bookcase filled with indulgent holiday reading. Even the least-floral guest couldn’t fail to be seduced by the generosity of the widely-travelled Huttons, who will welcome you with a glass of wine, advise you where to eat out, and lead you in a wander round their wonderfully unspoilt, part-Tudor, part-Georgian home next door, filled with comfortable antiques (just mention the A-word and Jill will tailor a shopping trail for you). A gem.
