Penpoll, Fowey
Lostwithiel, Cornwall, England
Wave goodbye to the caravans trundling west; drop down to deep peace. A web of narrow lanes and a tumbling green valley have done the trick: Penpoll is unstirred and all the more special for it. Open the front gate, hop over the lane to the shallow creek, bring the children to dam, paddle and splash. (You may not spot a single car.) Penpoll is old, so don’t expect perfection, but it is very comfortable and much-loved, with family photos, books and games dotted about. Charm comes from deep window sills, stooping door frames, beams, creaky floorboards and the odd piece of antique furniture. There’s room for muddy boots and space to spill out to eat – the dining room’s long wooden table is a good spot for an evening meal - a new cream Aga brings rosy cheeks. The kitchen - slate floors, wooden cupboards - is neat and holds all you need. Drift off on a stripy sofa in the freshly decorated sitting room, curl up by the wood-burner - there are views from all rooms out to the creek. Bedrooms are cosy and have pretty throws and cushions: you’ll sleep soundly. Two doubles and two rooms tailor-made for budding swallows and amazons will suit a big family or perhaps two together. There’s a steep garden behind, with a barbecue and a pirate boat sandpit - but best of all is the setting: it’s stunning.
