The Towers, Llanfairfechon
Conwy, Wales
Marvellous to find a house by the beach that sleeps 25! And there’s no great need for a car when you’re here: it’s a short boat trip to Puffin Island and the station is next door (three hours to London, quarter of an hour to Bangor or Llandudno). Towers is a Grade II-listed ex-harbour master’s house built in 1872, sporting a gothic-style tower with 360 degree views. And there are bedrooms galore, from four-posters upstairs to bunk beds down, and doubles and twins in between (all but one with private access). Some rooms are in the long modern annexe at the back but the best are in the house, one with a vivid Lady of Shallot mural, another with a Baliese hessian-clad ceiling. Three rooms get the sea view. The sitting room, overlooking the car park, is turquoise with a domed ceiling painted with stars; and the kitchen, overlooking the garden (with putting green), guards a large range. There’s a library, a dining room with a vast table, even a private cinema. In short, a comfortable – and unusual - house suitable for a mix of generations. Floors are wooden, fireplaces Victorian, ceilings domed, there are woven cane beds, big patterned sofas and gleaming plants. Alex, the dynamic young owner, has even arranged for a caretaker to live next door a couple of nights a week.
