Little Garth, York
Sinnington, Yorkshire, England
In the gentle, southern foot hills of the North York Moors, short miles from bustling market towns, lies this ancient settlement with Norman church and trout stream. Tucked behind the hedge-fringed village street is a dear little house with lavender-edged front lawn and cosy porch. Turn the key, drop your bags in the flagged hall and leave the world behind. Having just swapped her whitewashed holiday farmhouse in the Lakes for this pretty, listed stone cottage, Philippa has poured love and flair into Little Garth. After a major sort out, all is light, warm and immaculate. Polished and flagged floors sport cheerful rugs. Pots of fresh flowers glow on old pine tops. Cotton-covered armchairs are deep and comfortable. A light-filled, contemporary kitchen, with all the kit, opens to the rose and honeysuckle back garden. Sweetly sprigged bedroom walls, gleaming white woodwork and comfortable, generously clad beds add a feminine, winsome air; bliss to come home to after trudging the sheep-speckled moors or battling with the Friday night traffic. Light the candles, throw another log on the fire and pop the cork - or wander down the wide village street to the local pub. A lovely little hideaway.
