Felin Newydd House, Brecon
Powys, Wales
A country pad par excellence – nothing does justice to this metamorphosis of substantial country house into decadent 21st-century retreat. You’re obliged to come with as many friends as you can muster. Lord and lady it over the 50-acre estate – hunting parties can be arranged and house staff brought in to attend to every whim. Sweeping through the grand hallway, be dazzled by light streaming through the angular cupola. The first to arrive may plump for the four-poster but each bedroom has its charm - old leather suitcases, a glossy chaise longue, polished riding boots waiting by the door - while a feminine eye has added strong pinks, tactile fabrics, glamorous bathrooms and fresh flowers. Life revolves around the Aga-toasty kitchen. Supper here - or dine at a mahogany table in the silk-draped drawing room, worth dressing up for. And then there are the morning room and the billiard room to retreat to, and the garden to stroll. On the site of a 17th-century mill, saved from extinction by a young Evans Bevan, the peachy-pink house is near the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains, so pull on the boots and gorge-walk, fish and canoe.
