The Lighthouse, Old Country Farm, Malvern
Worcestershire, England
Ella’s dream to build the first ‘light house’ in Herefordshire came true. This heavenly retreat is bathed in light - and is equally light on the planet. It is a green-oak build of the highest order, vaulted to the ceiling and uplifting in every sense. Floors and walls are oak, work surfaces granite, baths and beds super-generous, solar panels cloak the roof and the heating is underfloor. A wood-burner and sheepskin rugs warm the sitting room, eating is an event at the lengthy dining table with Shaker-style ash chairs, there’s a snug library to retreat to for drinks later, and, with no TV, you make your own entertainment on the Steinway piano and guitar. Spiral up the staircase to a bedroom with a view, its balcony perched over lazily grazing sheep. This tranquil and uncluttered house, the perfect place for reuniting with family or friends, is set on the edge of a cider orchard with the Malvern Hills to the east. Slip through glass doors to a garden and farmland that softens every edge, stride down country lanes or across Ella’s farm to the hills. Simple yet stunning architecture, green credentials, space and harmony – if only you could bottle it! Malvern and Ledbury are close by.
