Special Escapes: Self-catering in the UK

Fentafriddle

Fentafriddle, Trewarmett, Tintagel, Cornwall, England

A steep drive curls up from Trebarwith's rocky valley onto open pasture and a spectacular view west over the ocean. The house – set in the lee of a hill so the wildest winds go over the top – is part-Georgian, part-Victorian; the Round House, now a sitting room, was once a corn mill. (And the springs – 'fentafriddle' – still gush by.) Step into one of the most comfortable and stylish holiday homes in Cornwall: solid oak floors topped with kilims and Persian rugs, heaps of squishy sofas and elegant cushions, a spectacular circular wood-burning stove, books and games galore and French windows spilling light and sea views. James and Lucy, charming, easy-going and living close by, are sticklers for detail, so bathrooms have organic soaps and heated towel rails, there's a wet room downstairs lined with limestone and a gorgeous red roll-top bath in a bedroom up, the windows are double-glazed, the sills are reclaimed local slate, and the mattresses sport 1,000 springs. In the smart kitchen, a Cotswold-stone floor, an island unit and a pretty Welsh dresser: again, contemporary luxury combines with period character. A good bar and restaurant are a walk away, one of Cornwall's prettiest beaches lies below, and the peace, views and sunsets will make your heart soar. Fabulous.

Coast Magazine votes Fentafriddle as the best in the UK!

Fentafriddle has been voted the best self catering establishment in the UK by Coast Magazine (March 2009) 'Outside this atmospheric barn conversion, you'll be met with the kind of vista cinematographers go to film school to learn about. Views are just as good from the inside, too. The property sleeps eight in four tastefully decorated bedrooms and everything's very child friendly.'
