Tyas Cottage

Tyas Cottage, Merrydale, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England

Not easy to find, but what a discovery - a stunningly restored cottage in the northern Pennines. Old mills, drystone walls, sheep-dotted hills, Halifax, Piece Hall, the Sculpture Park, the Brönte Museum: the daunting, dramatic landscape of the Industrial Revolution deserves to be better known. Victoria and John live close by and settle you in beautifully (they may even walk your dog!). Local materials and modern comforts make a good mix in this old weaver's cottage and barn. The huge queen truss in the living room comes from a nearby mill and the carved chimney lintel is original; add colourful rugs on toasty flagged floors (heated underfoot), Cape Dutch antiques, contemporary Chilean rushback chairs and bags of style. The large open-plan kitchen has every mod con and a corner sofa-seat; then up the metal spiral stair to the dramatic living room. A glorious Georgian four-poster dominates the master bedroom with its wooded valley views; the twin is next door and the third bedroom on the ground floor. White en suite bathrooms are stocked with towels and hot water is generated from solar panels. You get your own paved entrance and enclosed stepped garden, and the shared gardens beyond, bounded by a small mill pond and stream, are astonishing (Victoria is a landscape architect and her work on Tyas has been featured in the magazine 20 Beautiful Gardens). Birds abound - herons, kingfishers, owls - and from the tap comes fresh spring water for delicious tea.

The cottage is doubly insulated, heated by an air-source heat pump, and waste is recycled.
