Mirefoot Cottages

Mirefoot Cottages, Burneside, Kendal, Cumbria, England

Arrive in spring, for budding hedgerows and wild daffodils on grassy verges - the narrow lanes that lead to this spot in the National Park are a joy. And Kate, an Australian who married an Englishman and lives in the main house, is here to greet with a lovely big smile. The Old Grain Store is attached to the 17th-century farmhouse and has been restored to create two cottages. It is a fabulously comfortable and welcoming space. On the ground floor and the first floor is The Old Grain Store and, tucked underneath on the lower ground floor, The Old Shippon. In The Grain Store expect soft carpeting, white walls, a big-check sofa and chairs, an antique pine table, a log-effect wood-burner, board games and books (there is a highchair, cot and stair-gate for little ones too). And, from the L-shaped open-plan living area and small kitchen, an open staircase that leads to a spacious but cosy bedroom under the eaves, with sweeps of wooden ceiling, a velux window and a gorgeous view. A three-acre garden, with tennis court, imaginative landscaping and mini lake, is generously shared. And there's a private terrace with tomato plants and barbecue. You are six miles from Windermere and walks start from the door.

The Old Shippon (sleeps 2) is on the lower ground floor and is also available.
