Abercelyn - Tithe Barn, Abercelyn Country House, Llanycil, Bala, Gwynedd, Wales
If you love outdoor activities and adventure, step forward: this is for you. Ray and Lindsay are not only great walkers but Ray organises trips: sailing, fishing and canoeing on Lake Bala. There are maps to borrow and a store room for bikes. They are also keenly 'green', having gained a Green Tourism Award for Snowdonia, and another for encouraging wildlife, which starts with the bird feeders in the garden. So their conversion of the Tithe Barn was bound to be sympathetic. Up here, in the land of lakes, woods and single-track roads, this Grade II-listed building, with a road on one side and a sheltered courtyard on the other, has been divided into two units. The barn has chunky limewashed walls, new slate-tiled floors, gleaming pine furniture and the odd slit window for character (though not light!), and some wonderfully rustic exposed stone walls. It is all as cosy and as comfortable as can be, especially upstairs where bedrooms and bathrooms squeeze under the eaves. All you need, and more, is here: a well-equipped kitchen, two cosy sofas, a nest of tables, a characterful clock, a patio with barbecue, a whirlpool corner bath. There are other self-catering cottages in the grounds and all share the gorgeous gardens that surround the main house where your most welcoming hosts run B&B.
A second Tithe Barn, which sleeps 4, is also available.
