Two Chapel Lane, 2 Chapel Lane, Stamford, Rutland, England
Close to church, pub and lovely old bridge, the cottage is 18th century and listed, its slate, timber and warm Barnack stone immaculately restored. Enter a cosy interior painted and furnished in a serene country style that will appeal to all. Imagine rich velvet sofas with fuchsia flowered cushions, original art on pure white walls, cottage windows hung with Cath Kidston blinds. The granite surfaces gleam, the wood-burner promises cosy nights (logs provided), the south-facing courtyard is perfect for 'barbecues' and you can pre-order a breakfast hamper – organic and locally sourced – to wait on the table for you (or flowers, champagne, chocolates – whatever you decide to splash out on). More elegant simplicity in the bedroom upstairs, where a white cotton bedspread coats a white-framed bed, an antique jug and bowl furnish a pine dresser and windows overlook church and lane. The second room, white-walled and carpeted in beige twisted wool, squeezes in a wooden bed, a bedside table and a wardrobe. The bathroom is small but perfectly formed. Rural peace – yet in ten minutes you're on the A1, off to the rolling hills and villages of the unsung 'Cotswolds'. Rutland Water promises bikes, canoes, boats and wildlife; Georgian Stamford is where Pride and Prejudice was filmed.
