Lower Farm Cottage

Lower Farm Cottage, Lower Farm, Shelve, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England

A lovely duck-egg blue, the cottage hunkers down on a smallholding in the village of Shelve, deep in the Shropshire Hills. Most striking are the views, to be relished at leisure from little seating areas on the farm's four acres - shared by a friendly horse and a dozen sheep. Jane's house dates from the 17th century; the slightly younger guest cottage, restored using sustainable materials and traditional building techniques, was the cow byre. You enter a surprisingly large living room, with the kitchen by the door (neatly fitted, well supplied), the sitting area at the opposite end and a dining table between the two. It's a light and generous space, the beamed ceiling being loftier than the low profile of the exterior would lead you to believe. There are soft lemon walls, pretty stripped pine, cream sofas on a rosy rug, a log-burner for winter, and a big window overlooking the courtyard. The bedroom, not huge, is comfortable, and has views of the hills; the bathroom is sparkling white with thick towels on hot rails. Jane is friendly and welcoming and offers you produce from her vegetable plot in season, as well as games, DVDs and local info, stored away in the utility room just across the courtyard.
