Special Escapes: Self-catering in the UK

Lower Inchlumpie

Lower Inchlumpie, Strathrusdale, Alness, Ross-shire, Scotland

You arrive through rolling farmland then forestry road, from which you can spy the house below you, with the river Alness rushing by. Inside is totally tickety boo: a large, bright, kitchen/diner has a French oak table for ten, a smart black floor, armies of pans, nifty cooker and even cookery books, pasta and bread makers. For those who prefer to flop there are three places to choose from: downstairs the central hall has a wood-burning stove and comfy sofa, a large landing has a table for jigsaws, and the main sitting room upstairs has an open fire, books and a music system; photographs, prints and ethnic wall hangings give interest and make the place feel homely. You will sleep soundly in bedrooms (not huge) but warm and spotless with pocket sprung mattresses and modern pine; those who choose to sleep upstairs can lie and look at the stars – no light pollution! Bathrooms are pristine and modern with heated towel rails, large towels and L'Occitane natural soaps. The wildlife is throbbing (bird seed and binoculars provided), views from the house over forest and mountains are sublime, and there are great walks from the door. This is perfect for a family holiday or for groups of friends who want a bit of peace and quiet, yet you are near to Inverness, fine beaches, fishing, and golf courses.
