East Penrest Barn, East Penrest Farm, Launceston, Cornwall, England
"Wow!" was our response to this stunning stone and slate barn on the edge of the Tamar Valley. In a fabulous farmyard setting and sympathetically converted, the barn's upside-down arrangement makes for a user-friendly space (and proper wheelchair access). On the ground floor, where farm animals once munched, guests sleep in a row of cosy beamed, flagged bedrooms, each with a stable door to the south-facing patio. Upstairs, the old threshing barn has been transformed into a breathtaking, convivial space: a light-filled, 50ft-long, open-plan living area with a kitchen at one end and a book-filled snug at the other. Easy-going country antiques, rugs on pitch pine floors and old map prints add to the charm – all topped off by the beautifully restored beamed ceiling. Owners Jo and James farm organically and are happy for families to meet the sheep and the cows (the visitors' book is laden with snippets from delighted children). Green-fingered Jo can supply home-grown veg and organic lamb, and will rustle up dinner if requested. A charming pub is a walk away, as is the River Inny; Launceston, the ancient capital of Cornwall, is five miles. Or you can wildlife watch from your sunny patio after a day at the north or south Cornish coast.
