High Houses

High Houses, Snittlegarth, Carlisle, Cumbria, England

"A cross between a farmhouse, a castle and a fine hotel" - our inspector loved High Houses. Tucked away at the quieter, northern end of the Lake District National Park, this beguiling and rustic 17th-century hilltop house has old lime-plastered walls, wooden beams, open fires, original flagstones and a sitting room floored with great planks of new oak. It feels utterly authentic and the owners, Oliver and Jill, have wisely resisted smoothing out the rough edges; 1920s graffiti still adorns the stable dividers. The hardships of country living have, however, been thoroughly banished, thanks to such modern comforts as sumptuous bed linen and towels, handmade soaps and hot radiators. The bedrooms may prompt some agonising decisions – do you opt for the room with the cockloft for kids and the roll top bath, or the four-poster room with the open fire? There's a huge farmhouse kitchen with a cosy Aga, a cavernous fridge and modern gadgets aplenty. Stunning, soul-quietening views reach out from every window to wildlife-rich farmland beyond - 350 aces of it and yours to explore. Venture further afield to the Lakes and the Solway Plain. Seventh heaven for sybarites - and hearty walkers!
