Barsham Barns, Greenway, North Barsham, Norfolk, England
Follow the footsteps of Henry VIII to the medieval village of Walsingham, home to the shrine of Our Lady (plus farm shop, two pubs and a rather good restaurant). Return to the luxury of Grey's Court - originally a stables, now an exceptional one-storey house. From the big inner courtyard set with pebbles and potager to the beautiful loft-like rooms, it's awash with sunlight and space. Potter Jenny and her architect husband have transformed a complex of brick and flint barns set in a pretty valley that is more Cotswolds than Norfolk – yet the glorious North Norfolk Coast is only five miles away. So you have the best of country-everything including the barn: an enticing palate of flint, cobbles, chalk and beams, warm textures and sophisticated furnishings, a hamper full of goodies and romantic country sounds (wagtails and warblers, cockerel and sheep). The sitting room, its panelling painted a cool Scandinavian blue, has a groovy wood-burner, the kitchen is perfect for entertaining (you can order a chef), the bathrooms are sleek and the bedrooms have delightful decorative touches. A shared spa (you can book for exclusive use), two games rooms and long lovely views complete the picture. If you've come from the city this is nothing short of heaven.
