Spekes House, Spekes Mill Mouth, Hartland, Bideford, Devon, England
What a setting! Plonk yourself down at the garden table and there is the sea; stroll down the driveway and there is the valley. The Hartland Peninsula is exceptionally beautiful, and the elevated Spekes House is an exceptional place from which to enjoy it - full of light, comfort and spaciousness. Built in 1920 as a cottage on the Stucley Estate, it was extended by the current owners who brought up their children here; although uncluttered and immaculate, it is a house that feels wonderfully homely and well-loved. There's a sitting room with books, pictures, open fire and deep sofas, a dining room with a grand farmhouse table, a kitchen big enough for cooks to have helpers, a battery of pans and a cosy blue Aga. Rugs soften warm beech floors and crisp walls, there are pretty jugs on the dresser, stylish curtains at the windows and house plants in every corner. Off the big, bright, sofa'd landing are four bedrooms under the eaves, softly carpeted and with spectacular views. No sound will disturb you, just the whistling of the wind on wild nights. You're up with the elements here and it is wonderfully re-energising – a magical place for writers, artists, walkers, beachcombers and (competent) surfers.
