Ashknott Cottage

Ashknott Cottage, Main Street, Kirkby Malzeard, Yorkshire, England

In a quintessential Dales village, where pretty farmworkers' cottages march up the high street, is a beautifully looked-after two-up two-down. Smart paintwork on the soft green front door, bushes and plants at the front, a little gravelled yard - a suntrap! - at the back. Sarah, warm and friendly, meets and greets, lights the wood-burner, prepares freshly ground coffee and local cake... her background is in local tourism (she lives in Harrogate) so make the most of her knowledge. The sitting room is immediately through the front door, with deep red and cream walls, beams and wood-burning stove, soft sofas, books, games, magazines and CDs: wonderfully cosy on a wild Yorkshire night. The kitchen is a good size, open plan, with Venetian blinds and pretty Shaker-style cupboards; extras include a bottle of wine and two of real ale, organic doggie treats and recipe books for cooks. Coir-clad stairs invite you up to a pretty, cream-painted bed and a super bathroom, soft towels and plump pillows - as fresh and as lovely as all the rest. You don't have to have a dog to stay here but as far as walkies goes, this is dog heaven, with Nidderdale unfolding all around you, and a circular sprint round the village before bedtime. (Note: no dogs upstairs!).
