Heath House

Heath House, Errogie, Inverness, Inverness-shire, Scotland

A big wow: the drive through the Loch Ruthven Nature Reserve is stunning. The New England style upside-down house is the first of Debbie and husband's new projects at Errogie and is perfect for families and gangs of friends. Bedrooms, on the ground floor, are a good size, simple and contemporary, each with different coloured throws, cushions and towels, all with firm mattresses and long views over the woodland; the master bedroom opens to an outdoor deck. Bathrooms are modern and stylish with clean lines and sparkling tiles. Then it's up the stairs to an enormous, open-plan living room with oak floorboards, exposed beams and floor-to-ceiling windows – a great space for board-games and DVDs or for being quiet and looking at the tree tops. The kitchen has an island with stools so the chef won't be entirely alone, and there's all you need for serious cooking; eat at an oak dining table with windows on three sides, or out on the balcony. Be prepared for heavy snow: you are halfway between two ski resorts, Aviemore and Anoch Mhorfish; and, if you come in the summer, boat trips on Loch Ness, canoeing, walking, and a day trip to Skye is even a possibility.
