The Old Stores

The Old Stores, Fore Street, Mousehole, Cornwall, England

Such a sweet approach, along Mousehole's horseshoe-shaped quay. As for the cottage, you wouldn't know it was there unless you sought it out, tucked behind the renowned 2 Fore Street restaurant. The Old Stores is small, secluded and peaceful, with a Mediterranean whitewashed exterior and a suntrap courtyard full of pots. Inside: a contemporary and cleverly designed one-up one-down - a heavenly haven for two (plus baby). A slate floor unites the open-plan downstairs: the kitchen along one wall, with Belfast sink and small rack of wines (you pay as you go); the sitting area with lovely L-shaped, low-backed sofa, turquoise rug and wood-burning stove; the white dining table topped with bright glasses and fresh flowers; the super-cool wet room with storm shower. A big mirror propped against a white wall adds space, paintings and cushions add colour. Up the carpeted stair to a light, airy bedroom that blends a quirky creativity with modern romance: white beams and floors crafted from fruit packing cases, a roll top bath with a silver scallop candleholder. From the welcome hamper of best Cornish produce and the aromatic soaps (organic, local) to the made-to-measure service the owners offer you (do ask), this is one of the cutest hideaways on the coast. Penzance is a bus hop away, Land's End is not much further.
