Horry Mill

Horry Mill, Hollocombe, Chulmleigh, Devon, England

Pied fly-catchers, a babbling brook, 20 acres of natural woodland, wild flowers, ducks, chickens - rural bliss. Mobile phones don't work, the only tune you will hear is birdsong: what a place for the great escape. This was once a miller's cottage, destroyed by fire in the 18th century, then rebuilt using the old beams and timbers. Sonia has accentuated the original features – the big fireplace in the beamed sitting room with a plentiful supply of logs, the wide oak stairs, the gleaming floor boards in the bedrooms - and added good solid cottage furniture, a flat-screen TV, lots of games and books, an old iron bedstead with crisp white linen, nice china and a pretty window seat overlooking the cottage garden. Milk and newspapers can be delivered, and when Sonia's not looking after their Abderdeen Angus cattle, she will do all your shopping for you, so you can put the car in mothballs. She and Simon, who live in the Millhouse a little way away, are homely and welcoming. You'll love Simon's pièce de résistance: a beautiful, wooden thatched summer house a step from your door. Peaceful and untouched: a perfect place for star-gazing.
