Strang Cottages, Manor Farm, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England
Kite-flying on the downs, a ride on the ponies, a helping hand with the animals. There's so much to do on the doorstep of these sturdy stone cottages you'll be up with the lark. Part of a working organic farm, they're ideal for active families. Both have a modern cottagey feel: rooms are light, spacious, sunny with big windows and stunning country views. Sofas are plump, walls are white, furniture is stripped pine, lighting is smart. No chintz, no fussy ornaments. Bedrooms have a fresh, breezy feel while bathrooms are simple and spotless. Wood-burning stoves, exposed brickwork, fresh flowers, books and games create a welcoming, homely atmosphere, while thoughtfully equipped kitchens make cooking a joy – and why not try the farm-produced organic beef? If you're too busy to cook, Gillie, a trained chef, can organise hampers and barbecue packs or simply, stock the fridge. The village shop, too, has local, organic food, and is open until late. Each cottage has its own gate, and gardens (safe for children), patio and barbecue; and if you're hiring both together, there's room and crockery enough in one for you all to eat together. Explore Stonehenge and Longleat, stroll over the South Wessex Downs (there are two pubs quite close), then return to the garden terrace and drink in the views.
