Gwenoldy, Coed y Mynydd Isaf, Afonwen, Mold, Flintshire, Wales
Lambs bleat, bright healthy hens peck, a fabulous glossy peacock struts and swallows swoop – indeed, Gwenoldy means 'Swallows Rest'. Take in the rural bustle and heavenly views of the Clwydian hills before stepping through French windows into this converted 18th-century barn. A spotless country kitchen greets you: cheery blue and terracotta tiles, a good-sized dining table, soft lighting and all the little luxuries of modern life. The living room is appealing too, with its honey-coloured oak floors, big comfy chairs and wood-burning stove (logs on the house). Games, books, maps and jigsaws invite you to relax. Upstairs, the light double room has prettily embroidered fresh white bed linen and bags of cupboard space. Old beams and primrose walls give the twin a cosy, attic feel. The bathroom is spotless and countrified like the rest of the house – admire the view as you polish your pegs! Your pretty, hedged garden (safe for young children) has a patio and gas-barbie, rolling field and moorland views. The walking here is fabulous (Offa's Dyke is less than a mile away) and there are maps and leaflets in the Old Bakehouse opposite – brilliant. Little ones have egg-collecting, a swing, football goal and a tame peacock to amuse. Deeply secluded, yet it's no distance to Chester, Snowdonia and some magnificent castles.
No dogs.
