The Boat House, Rosehaugh Estate

The Boat House, Rosehaugh Estate, Avoch, Ross-shire, Scotland

The estate is gloriously rural and there are acres of mature woodland and babbling brook, yet you are only 25 minutes from Inverness. Tucked down its own long drive is the Boat House, a two-storied, oak-framedsehaugh Estate, Avoch, Ross-shire, building with pink tiles. The old boat storage area is now a crisp, attractive bedroom with stunning views and a state-of-the-art power shower. Up the steep spiral staircase, where the ladies once took tea, is another bedroom - and a sitting room with swish leather sofa and chairs, tweedy checked cushions and original stone fireplace. Light bursts in from the many windows, but you will want to go out onto the balcony from here and watch the lake where water-boatmen bustle, trout twirl and leap, and the heron swoops. And you can watch it all from here or from the lower balcony on a deckchair. Beautiful wooden flooring throughout, clever use of subtle colours and a superbly well-equipped kitchen make this a stylish retreat. No formal garden outside, but plenty of wild flowers, banks of snowdrops and bluebells in the spring; if you can bear to escape, this is the ideal spot from which to explore the Highlands.

Not suitable for children or the disabled.
