Discover rhododendrons and camellias from as far back as 1840 in the 'American' garden; tumble up treehouses and rope swings in the wilderness; nose around the Victorian greenhouse. Susi and Paul are passionate about their eight-acre restoration project, here in a beautiful corner of Devon, and already have a Gold Green Tourism Business Scheme Award under their belt. You reach your Garden Rooms via steps up to a private Italianate terrace, long, south-facing, wisteria-clad – perfect for summer snoozes and sundowners. Double doors swing open to an immaculate open-plan living and dining area with solid oak floors, sofa, wood-burning stove and smart cream kitchen. On the same floor is the bedroom, its fabulous big bed clad in cream organic cotton; French windows feed back onto the terrace (the best bit, according to our inspector) with wonderful views of the ponds and bathed in birdsong, while underfloor heating, fluffy cream towels and posh organic smellies cosset you in the neat but spotless bathroom. Future green plans include a freshwater swimming pond, hydro-power and solar heating – and the brilliant welcome hamper includes homemade bread. The riverside town of Kingsbridge is a 10 minute walk, and you are extremely well placed for exploring the glorious South Hams.
