The Old Byre, Waternish, Isle of Skye, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Eagles swoop over the loch, orchids bloom, corncrakes nest in the wildflower meadows. Lap it all up from your stone cowshed studio – simple and rugged from the outside, cosy and contemporary within. The open-plan living area focuses on a wood-burning stove; double-glazed patio doors and windows pull the light and views in, but keep roaring gales out; TV, radio and eye-catching artworks entertain. The kitchen area is exquisite in Caithness slate and oak – local materials and craftsmen were used for almost everything (and that includes a local potter for the crocks). A breakfast bar overlooks the beautiful bay. You sleep on a comfortable sofabed downstairs and relax on a sofa on the mezzanine, reached by a swing-down ladder. The slate shower room lies beneath this gallery: a great shower, gorgeous soaps, plentiful soft towels. This is a fabulous spot on the Waternish peninsula - spot whales, otters, seals, basking sharks - while the village guards a fantastic community of musicians, potters, fishermen... and the oldest pub on Skye.
