Special Escapes: Self-catering in the UK

Otter Lodge, Rosehaugh Estate

Otter Lodge, Rosehaugh Estate, Avoch, Ross-shire, Scotland

What was a power-generating station is now an unusual, beautifully renovated retreat, tucked down its own drive and overlooking a beck that runs right beneath. There's a viewing window in the floor of the magnificent sitting room so you can sit and watch water, fish and birds. Huge gothic windows let the light flood into this swish, softly-painted room with its leather sofas and chairs, smooth wooden floors and thickly lined curtains; the large table extends and can seat eight happily. Bedrooms have fresh flowers, pale wooden furniture and sparkling bathrooms; the kitchen is modern and has state-of-the-art hardware; cooking a meal here would be a joy. Or you could decide to be lazy and order in - just ask. Explore the estate with its acres of mature woodland, the magical horseshoe waterfall with buddha statue sitting serenely at the bottom, and marvel at the wildlife. Red squirrels, pine martens, deer... all can be spotted depending on the season, while birdwatchers delight in ospreys, buzzards and even red kites. There are good local beaches and cliff walks - or you can sit by your own beck and appreciate the peace and quiet.
