May's Cottage

May's Cottage, Pendoggett, Nr. Port Isaac, Cornwall, England

This area of Cornwall is not so much honey pot as honey barrel. Forget nose-to-tail cars stuffed with crabbing nets, sandy surfboards and damp children - come to the quiet, winding lanes leading to May's Cottage instead. This really is an escape. The sturdy cottage was built for a farmer's elderly aunt 100 years ago, but there's little to remind you of its rugged past other than the hint of exposed brickwork in the dining room fireplace or a bare beam spanning the open-plan ground floor. Instead, you have wall-to-wall wool carpet, deep sofas, chunky modern coffee tables, well-hunted antiques (such as some high-backed Norwegian chairs), and the odd fun coastal painting. Julia has lavished as much attention on this as most of us would on our own home, and there's everything you could need for a rainy day: dvds, games, broadband, a Bose iPod dock, a real fire. If the sun shines, and you're not astride a surfboard at Polzeath or window shopping in Padstow, there's a lovely - and very private - cottage garden with a barbecue and lawn games; a small, slate-floored conservatory, too. May's is as wonderful in winter as in summer, and its generous windows flood the house from dawn to dusk. A treat.

Children under 12 months and over the age of 5 welcome. Please call to discuss dogs (max two well-behaved).
