Special Escapes: Self-catering in the UK

Stone Cottage

Stone Cottage, 2 Lane Head, Deepdale, Patterdale, Cumbria, England

A gritty stone exterior, a softly serene interior and achingly lovely views of dales and fells - here is a little slice of heaven. Old stone and wood have been brought to life with a flourish and local slate and Herdwick wool added for authenticity. L'Occitane toiletries and stunning fresh flowers add a fresh touch, glorious old photographs add history – the owners' dedication and attention to detail is exemplary. Two miles from Ullswater, down a narrow road, this cluster of old farm dwellings and delightful semi-detached cottage, built in 1908, come into view. The sitting room, with serving hatch and Arts & Crafts fireplace and mantle, was once the dining room of the 17th-century farmhouse next door; now its creamy walls are flooded with sunlight from windows running along one wall. Huge trusses reclaimed from a Cumbrian barn feature in the kitchen extension, a fireplace sits under a huge stone lintel in the separate dining room and a slate-lined shower room sparkles at the foot of the stairs. Upstairs are soft blues and lavenders, white cotton bedcovers and embroidered pillows, red butterflies fluttering across a blind. And a big white double-ended bathtub from which you may gaze on the shimmering fells. The still-wild garden at the back runs up the hill, the small sunny enclosed one at the front overlooks fields of bouncing lambs, and there's a bottle of Prosecco bubbling inside for you. Never mind a week's let: we'd move in tomorrow!

Stone Cottage has just won Cumbria Tourism's Self-catering award for 2007.
