Barton Bank Cottage, Red House, Barton, Cheshire, England
A romantic getaway for two – plus horse. You don't have to bring the horse, of course, but there is stabling and grazing outside the door, and excellent riding all around. Indeed, your own cottage is a renovated stable, overlooking a paddock where ponies graze. Beyond, the countryside rolls away to the horizon. Off the main road, past the redbrick houses (one of which is the owners') and there it is: a pretty little pale-brick building with a pitched roof and a private drive. Open the door to an open-plan, lofty and stylishly revamped interior - warm, intimate and cosy. You get a little wood-burner and a basket of logs, a shimmering bedspread on a modern four-poster, a sumptuous roll top tub on creamy new tiles, a smart leather sofa. Windows are screened by wooden Venetian blinds and the separate shower room sparkles; from the organic welcome pack in the galley kitchen to the dimmer switches on the exposed brick walls, it exudes quality. Outside, overlooking the horses, are a cosy arbour seat, a teak table and chairs under a plane tree, and a covered decked area for cooler evenings. If you fancy eating out, there's a gastropub a two-minute walk away, which foodies travel miles to visit. If you fancy a round of golf, there's a course over the road – and a fabulous spa attached for yet more pampering.
