Pelyn Creek Cottage, Gerrans, Portscatho, Truro, Cornwall, England
Rumble along the track to Pelyn, hop out to open the gates (there are free-range sheep about), and there shines St Mawes in the distance, at the end of a shimmering creek. Over the cattle grid - clang, clang, they'll hear you coming - and down to the cottage. Graham and Bridget will be there to meet you. Upside-down, so the open-plan living area gets the valley views, all is bright and neat inside. Upstairs: slate floors, checked curtains, navy sofas with stripy cushions; a log-burner for chillier times, an ornamental balcony if the sun shines. Bridget has thought of everything - the table's laid in the turquoise kitchen: a checked cloth, flowers from the garden, homemade jam and home-laid eggs. Creep down the narrow stairs: slate floors and a white bathroom suite shine in front of you, there's a cosy twin, and a double with king bed decked in green and white gingham, creamy walls and wooden floors. Open the stable door to your patio, bring out the barbecue. Though the cottage is new, there's history at Pelyn: there are 11th-century foundations beneath the main house next door, and smugglers used the creek to hide brandy. Now there's a sailing school ten minutes along the shore - and St Mawes is walkable, too.
