Gothic Villa, Ferryside, Ferryside, Carmarthenshire, Wales
The Bowens have done a great job of restoring and re-dressing this 1851, Georgian-style, one-time Customs Office. The result is restfully, stylishly inviting. Tiles, stripped boards, coir matting and harmonious colours are the backdrop to just-the-right paintings, posters and pottery. Lovely Welsh blankets on the (sprung) beds – two with fine views across the Towy to Llanstephan and its Norman castle ruins – and bright, airy bathrooms (2 roll-tops). The contemporary/traditional mix is well thought through: the kitchen has a huge fan oven, the sitting room a wood-burning stove. The inside is compact; outside, a pretty garden is growing up around a wide, sheltered terrace. Ferryside itself is not so picture-perfect but it does have a real community. It's for those who prefer walking the broad, sandy beach at low tide and chatting with locals at the Boat Club, rather than mingling with crowds of visitors. It helps if you're a railway fan too – in the 1840s the line came through and runs between the house and the estuary. So, you can train to within 500 yards and freight back something irresistible from the Bowens' Antiques Gallery, just down the road. Visit Laugharne, Llandeilo, the gorgeous gardens of Aberglasney and the Gower, too.
