Camnacar Cottage, The Old Dairy, Main Street, Kirkmichael, Perthshire, Scotland
The cottage has a welcoming smile, with lupins blooming and the Camnacar burn burbling to one side. Converted from a couple of stone buildings it stands next to the old dairy where the owners live. Miles and Hannah – pursuing their vision of forest gardening and foraging, planning their hydro electric power, nurturing their family, hens and two happy pigs – greet you generously and offer you a basket of homemade delights. This is a perfect place for young children and their parents, and there's nothing of value to fret about, just a comfortable sofa and a wood-burning stove, an old dining table in the corner, a big useful kitchen with a stripped pine floor, videos, puzzles and Beatrix Potters aplenty, and a web-connected computer. The main bedroom has a maroon carpet and a big Edwardian wardrobe, the twin gets pine beds and a hanging rail for clothes, the mattresses are firm and the pillows are of down. In two rampant, den-perfect acres wildlife abounds – along with edible cobnuts, water mint, wild raspberries and sweet cicely. Great for families, nature-lovers, self-sufficiency fans... and musicians: the village reveres the memory of Niel Gow, Scotland's most famous fiddler, every Monday night.
