Applehay Studio

Applehay Studio, Applehay, Church Green, Shaftesbury, Dorset, England

Motor along the Wiltshire and Dorsetshire lanes, bordered by giant oaks and sycamores, and you will eventually stumble upon the village of Semley. Cross the green, past pub and church, and there, hidden behind a farm gate, is Applehay Studio. Crafted from local stone, this neat conversion is attached to the owners' cottage. Step in to find your sitting room and kitchen tucked into one space: reclaimed wood, creamy Farrow & Ball walls, checked fabrics, bright red sofa and rustic timbers. On cold days oil-fired heating thaws the chilliest of souls, while games, books and a flat-screen TV entertain. Sure-footed folk can spiral their way up the cast-iron stair to a mezzanine in the eaves, a charming space in which to slumber; drop off to the hoot of the owl. In the morning the room is bathed in light from the circular window. Refresh yourself in the sparkling shower downstairs, then tuck into croissants and coffee (croissants are supplied on the first morning); you'll be outside in summer where a table and chairs look out over the common to the village pond. Three miles down the road are the romantic ruins of Wardour Castle. This is country living without cowsheds or cobwebs – a lovely hideaway miles from the city.
