Hen Dy, Nanhoron, Pwllheli, Gwynedd, Wales
In the heart of the Llyn peninsula, an immaculately done-up house in gardens that people travel to see. The 5,000 acre estate has been in David's family for centuries; he and Bettina are delightful and expansive hosts and you can see the back of their mansion from the lovely West Garden. Open to guests until 6pm, ablaze with rhododendrons and azaleas in spring, it has views down to lake, pastures, woodland and sea. As for Hen Dy, it's the oldest house on the estate and was the gardener's bothy and laundry, with a bell tower that once announced mealtimes. Now you find a sitting room, large, light and serene, with books, games, soft sofas and SkyTV; in winter, estate logs crackle. The kitchen is made for domestic goddesses to star in (excellent equipment, gleaming red Aga), the smart dining room seats eight. Up stairs - or lift - to big restful bedrooms that feed off a wide landing, three of which overlook the lovely gardens, one with topiary, statues and gazebo. Red fabrics add pizzazz to the main room, whose dressing room has become a charming double (access being via the shared bathroom). For ball games and barbecues you have your own outside patch. Just the ticket for garden lovers, comfort-seekers and aspiring country landowners – and you are surrounded by the some of most gorgeous countryside in Gwynedd.
