Courtyard Cottage, Lone Barn, Catherington, Hampshire, England
Like home, only better. Fresh flowers, good books, logs from the basket waiting to be flung on the burner, bowls of fruit and a fridge of goodies for your first breakfast, including homemade bread. The large open living space has an oak floor, beamed and vaulted ceiling, oatmeal and cream sofas, and French doors into Melanie and Paul's gorgeous courtyard. The kitchen is a masterpiece, with rounded cupboards, plenty of working space and all a good cook needs; an oak table seats eight comfortably. Stylish bedrooms come with carved headboards, fresh duvets and down pillows, creamy carpets and, from the double, a spiral staircase leading to a 'den'. Children can escape from adults here; beams to climb through to get to bed, and a little sitting area with cushions and a telly. Soothe yourself with lotions from a local lavender farm in the crisp, contemporary bathrooms, warm with fluffy towels and robes. You are on the South Downs Way - excellent for walking and birdwatching - but the owner's large garden has outdoor skittles, a badminton net and a trampoline if you prefer close to home.
The Bat & Ball at Broadpenny Down, where cricket began, is 0.5 miles; Goodwood is a 30- minute drive.
