Feolin Farm, Craighouse, Argyll & Bute, Scotland
The wilds of Jura await, and where better to set up base than this charming farmhouse, lovingly restored? You are snug as a bug and safe under the Forest Estate's wing. Stalker Alasdair is local and can be called upon to offer advice on places to explore: the Paps, the famous Jura distillery, the sheltered lochs. The shore is minutes away and the surrounding woods and fields are resident to a host of wildlife; inside, all is cosy, cream-walled and oak laminate-floored. This is simple living at its best; the family room comes with extra beds, whilst the glorious double tempts you to sink into a deep slumber after a day's adventuring. Unfussy bathrooms are spotlessly clean with slick silver fittings and there's plenty of drying space for all-weather gear (wet dogs stay outside, in the kennels). The kitchen is cleverly organised with a small breakfast bar and all the crockery you could need, so come prepared to cook up a storm (there are no big supermarkets here). The living room is light with splashes of colour – bright sofas, cheery curtains – with a TV and DVD player to entertain you. Most lovely of all, though, is to sit by the fire and watch the weather whirl by. You may even be inspired to pen a note or two; George Orwell wrote 1984 on this windswept and wondrous isle.
