Waterfall Cottage, Achianich, Kenmore, Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland
Nature tingles at your fingertips the moment you arrive - the waterfall tumbles outside the living room window and almost reaches the decking. (Not the easiest place to whisper sweet nothings: it's quite loud when in spate!). No attempt here to recreate the old farm bothy - what you get instead is a piece of architecture that opens its arms to nature and doubles the original cottage's size. The windows are set at quirky angles so you catch the loch framed in one, the mountain in another, the lovely larches in a third. By night, underfloor heating and limed floors spread with rugs ensure comfort and warmth; painted Irish antiques add a zing; the kitchen lies at the far end, beyond the plump sofas, and is fabulously equipped. You get a powerful shower, a luxurious bath, a bedroom with a cathedral ceiling and discreet windows in unexpected places, for sidelong glances at magical views. Beds are luxuriously layered in natural linens with accents of red, testimony to Penny's skills as a designer. She and Roland have energy and humour and live 40 yards away in the house of their dreams; they welcome you in, then give you peace and quiet. A jetty (with fishing boat) is on its way, the setting is so lovely it will make your heart sing.
Sky Cottage, next door (sleeps 2), and Pier Cottage, along the loch (sleeps 4), are also gorgeous.
