The Summer House, Garway House, Garway Hill, Hereford, Herefordshire, England
The Summer House is set high in woodland on the Welsh borders. Light, bright, with dashes of colour, the sitting, dining and kitchen areas merge around a wood-burner and TV; outside, light shifts between tall stands of pines. You can hide away on a French daybed in the 'summer room' (a conservatory-style room reached via an external staircase) or join in the fun in the open-plan kitchen; on lazy days, you could order a home-cooked meal instead. On the same floor, the double bedroom oozes warmth and well-being with its Welsh wool blankets, duck down duvets and Axminster carpet made from recycled wool. Kids will love the low attic twin on the floor above. Young, bright and charmingly informal, sisters Jenny, Debbie and their families live in Garway House 40 feet across the lawn; ask them to order you a local, organic veg box or feast on their welcome hamper - a treat of local or fair trade goodies - the bathroom's toiletries are organic too. As well as a private lawn behind, three acres of rustic grounds are yours to explore: a spring-fed pool teeming with wildlife, a swimming pool shared with owners, a barbecue and a fire pit for cooler nights. Ross and Hay-on-Wye are a half hour's drive; the Black Mountains call walkers. Perfect for families or two couples.
